Where to stay for the World Cup in Mexico City
Mexico City hosts World Cup 2026 at the legendary Estadio Azteca — the only stadium ever to stage two World Cup finals — including the tournament's opening match. The historic ground sits in the southern Coyoacán/Tlalpan area, well south of the trendy Roma and Condesa neighborhoods where most visitors base themselves. This SeatHeat guide covers where to stay for the Mexico City World Cup, how to ride the Metro and Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca, and when to book hotels and flights into MEX or NLU. We track resale ticket prices, we don't sell tickets.

Where to stay near Estadio Azteca
The city's leafy, walkable epicenter of restaurants, cafes and nightlife, with boutique hotels and Airbnbs around $100-250/night. Central rather than near the stadium — allow at least 90 minutes to Estadio Azteca on match days via Metro plus Tren Ligero.
Upscale, safe and home to the city's luxury hotels and fine dining near Chapultepec Park. A premium base with excellent amenities; plan a longer transit or rideshare trip south to the stadium.
Mexico City's grand historic heart, packed with landmarks and well connected to Metro Line 2, which feeds the Tasqueña-to-Tren Ligero route to Estadio Azteca. Lively, central and transit-friendly.
Charming cobblestone southern neighborhood with colonial squares and the Frida Kahlo museum, noticeably closer to Estadio Azteca than the central colonias. A calmer, characterful base that shortens the match-day trip.
Getting to Estadio Azteca
Estadio Azteca is in the south of the city. The classic route is Metro Line 2 (blue) to Tasqueña, then the Tren Ligero light rail to Estadio Azteca station, a 5-minute walk from the ground; total time from downtown runs 45-60 minutes and fares are tiny (a few pesos each leg). By car, Uber or Didi from Roma/Condesa it's about 16-20 km and around 32 minutes in light traffic — but allow up to 90 minutes on match days, when traffic and crowds swell.
Airports
Mexico City International Airport (MEX, Benito Juárez) is the closest, about 16 km from Estadio Azteca with the widest international connections. Felipe Ángeles International (NLU/AIFA) is the secondary gateway about 50 km north; it can be cheaper but adds significant transit time, so favor MEX unless your fare savings are large.
When to book
Mexico City stages the opening match and is the marquee Mexican host, so demand is the highest of any venue in the country. Book hotels and flights as far ahead as possible — Roma and Condesa boutique stays and Polanco luxury rooms sell out and reprice fastest around the opener. If your dates are locked, reserve lodging now and watch resale ticket prices on SeatHeat for the right moment to buy.
